The Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress is one to get excited about. This hybrid model is made with both super soft foam layers and pocketed coils, which establishes a balanced vibe between deep, cuddly comfort and bouncy mobility.

Interested in learning more about this popular bed-in-a-box? Then you better read my full review of the Puffy Lux Hybrid below! I wanted to find out if the Puffy Lux Hybrid delivered on its reputation, so I put the mattress through a variety of tests to find out. I tested what this bed’s made of, how it feels, what kinds of sleepers might like it most, and more.

Ready to get to the bottom of the Puffy Lux Hybrid, and find out if it could be the bed for you? Read on for my detailed review! Short on time? Skip down to the end to check out my review summary.

Editor’s Note: The Puffy Lux Hybrid was previously offered in both a hybrid and all-foam model. The all-foam model has been discontinued. If you’re curious about this change, click here.

Puffy was launched by Arthur Andreasyan, who says his ultimate goal was to provide people with products that make it feel like they are sleeping on a cloud. The Lux Hybrid does have a soft cloud-like feel, but I wouldn’t recommend this memory foam mattress to everyone. While I can’t decide if this bed is a good mattress for you, I can provide you with some recommendations to help you get there on your own.

It can be difficult to ascertain how firm a mattress is, mostly because the measure varies so much from person to person! How firm a mattress feels will depend on your body type, sleeping position, and more. For reference, I’m around 5’10” and 190 pounds. So what seems firm or soft for me could be totally different for you. In order to get an overall perspective, I asked some colleagues to test out the Puffy Lux Hybrid with me and provide their input.

I felt myself sinking down into the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress quite a bit. Overall we ranked the Puffy Lux Hybrid a 5.5 out of 10 on a 1-10 mattress firmness scale, where 1 is super plush and 10 is ultra firm. For reference, the industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5 out of 10. The Puffy Lux Hybrid falls into the “medium-soft” category.

How a bed feels is pretty subjective, so I always run some tests on a new mattress to see exactly how it performs. To really determine whether a bed is a good match for you, it’s also important to consider how it performs in different sleeping positions, how it relieves pain and pressure, and how it might feel for couples sharing the bed. So let’s do just that!

Different sleeping positions and weights require different amounts of support. Generally, light sleepers don’t require the same amount of support as heavy sleepers. Read on below to see how the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress performs for sleepers of different weights.

Is the Puffy Lux Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?

To test a mattress for pressure relief, I use something called a pressure map. This is a mat you can unroll on top of a mattress, and it “maps” the pressure of your body on the bed when you lie down on it. Generally, too much pressure can lead to pain in sensitive areas like your lower back, hips, or shoulders — something we certainly want to avoid!

My test creates a color-coded pressure map, which shows pressure in a gradient ranging from green and blue for low-pressure to yellow and red for high-pressure. Here’s what I found:

Back Pain — Lying on my back was extremely comfortable. You can see here that the pressure map is blue across the board, so I think most back sleepers would find this mattress to have a soft, plush feel to it. This bed should help back sleepers achieve a neutral spinal alignment, which means their backs will be straight throughout the night. The opposite is at play when it comes to stomach sleepers with back pain. These sleepers will find the mattress sinking underneath their hips, which can lead to an uncomfortable curve in the spine.

Shoulder Pain — The Puffy Lux Hybrid offers great pressure relief, making it a nice mattress for sleepers with shoulder pain. When lying on my side, the pressure map is almost entirely blue, with just some tiny hints of blue-green around the shoulder and elbow that show areas with a little bit more pressure applied. Overall, this mattress could be a fantastic option for sleepers with shoulder pain.

Hip Pain — Lying on my stomach, my weight was completely evenly distributed — but that doesn’t tell the full story here. I felt like my hips were sinking a little too deeply into the bed, which could trigger some lower back pain over time. So, I wouldn’t recommend this bed to strict stomach sleepers with hip pain. Back sleepers and side sleepers with hip pain can rest assured this bed will actually work to relieve their hip pain while they sleep soundly.

Motion transfer measures the level of movement that “transfers” across a bed from one side to the other. Ultimately, this test determines how much a bedmate’s movement will disturb you. To measure motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid showed really low levels of motion transfer, which means I’d recommend this bed for some couples. If you share your bed and are a light sleeper, this mattress could be a real winner for you! The great motion isolation on the Lux Hybrid should help prevent you from feeling overly disturbed by a partner or pet moving around on the other side of the bed.

The sinking feeling that this mattress has is not something that you want in a mattress for sex. The layers of foam aren’t very responsive, but the support layer with pocketed coils helps out a little bit! This mattress is definitely not great for sex, but it is not horrible either. If sex is a deciding factor for you, I would look for a mattress with a little less foam and a little more bounce.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is going to keep you cool and moisture-free throughout the night. From the polyester cover, to the Cooling Cloud Foam, to the pocketed coils, this mattress combats tendencies to overheat with plenty of cooling technology and airflow. Because of all the cooling capabilities with the Puffy Lux Hybrid, I would recommend this bed to hot sleepers.

Last but not least, I tested out the edge support on the Puffy Lux Hybrid. This is a measure of whether the edges and corners of a mattress stay firm and in place when you get close to the sides of the bed.

When I was lying close to the edge of this model, I did feel the soft foam layers compressing and collapsing a little bit, meaning the edge support isn’t fantastic. In my opinion, this is pretty normal for a mattress that contains soft foams. But, because of the edge support issue, I wouldn’t recommend the model for heavier folks, or anyone worried about sliding off the bed at night.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a hybrid mattress, meaning it contains layers of foam and pocketed coils. The foams in the Puffy are all CertiPUR-US® Certified, which means they’re free of harmful chemicals.

Keep reading below to get more detail on what’s actually inside the Puffy Lux Hybrid.

Cover — The stain resistant mattress cover is made of a thin polyester blend that is quite breathable, which helps promote cooling airflow throughout the night.

Comfort Layer — Below the cover are two layers of polyurethane foam. The top layer is a Cooling Cloud foam and the second layer is Plush Dual Cloud foam. They offer the pressure-relieving feel of memory foam but are a little more breathable and responsive.

Transition Layer — Below the cushioning foam layers, you’ll land on a section of Climate Comfort foam with a bit more bounce. The main function of this layer is to curb the deep sinkage of the top sections of foam and gradually ease the sleeper into the firmer support section below. It also wicks away moisture to keep you from overheating at night.

Support Layer — The firm core support layer of this mattress consists of pocketed coils, which provide some lift and bounce. These coils are individually wrapped, which helps with temperature regulation.

Base Layer — Finally, there’s a base of high-density poly foam. This layer provides the coils with a surface to press off of.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will ship compressed straight to your door and will have to be unboxed. As with all bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24 hours for this bed to fully decompress.

As with most new mattresses, the Puffy Lux Hybrid will likely emit a smell when it is first unboxed — this is known as off-gassing. If you do detect an odor, I recommend unzipping the mattress cover and leaving it in a well-ventilated room for a few days while the smell completely dissipates.

So, is the Puffy Lux Hybrid the one for you? I can’t answer that question, but I can offer a few of my favorite things, as well as complaints, to help you get there on your own.

I really appreciate the balance of pressure relief and bounce this mattress offers. The Lux Hybrid is also fairly responsive thanks to the pocketed innerspring coils beneath the foam layers, which allow you to switch sleeping positions without feeling “stuck” in the mattress. This makes the bed a nice option for side and back combination sleepers who like a soft feel. The great motion isolation and cooling foams in this bed also make it a great mattress for couples. In general, if you’re someone who enjoys a soft feel, this hybrid mattress could work well for you.

I don’t think this mattress has great edge support. This could be an issue for heavier sleepers especially. I also think this mattress might be a bit less durable than a mattress that offers firm support. However, Puffy does offer a lifetime warranty on this mattress. This warranty is significantly longer than warranties offered by other mattress companies, which is a sign that Puffy is confident that this is a high-quality product.

Cost is a big factor when choosing a new mattress. Take a look at the chart below to get an idea of sizes and pricing. And be sure to visit our Puffy mattress coupon page to get a discount.

Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.
